What Michael Dell can teach us

Michael Dell started Dell in his dorm room. He was experimenting – he didn’t have all the answers but he was resourceful and targeted in his approach. He is recently noted as saying that the best advice he can give to a small business is this: Ensure direct contact with your customers at all times – because their needs are the core of your business… challenge the status quo, because it is your curiousity that will lead to your greatest ideas.

I’m pretty sure Michael Dell ran into a few issues and he probably made some poor judgments – but his preserverance and decision to embrace the learning curve obtained back in his dorm room days means, today? - a lot of people want to go to Dell.

Take your idea and focus it. Put it in one sentence. Experiment. Be resourceful, curious and persistent. Recognize that failure and obstacles are part of your success formula – so don’t be surprised when they happen… It’s all part of the journey. Stay near and true to your customers, know who they are, know what their needs are – then give your customers what they want.
